Isabel De Obaldía, Torsos
November 8 to December 1, 2001

Isabel De Obaldía was born in 1957 in Washington, DC. She grew up in Panama observing her father, the celebrated Panamanian painter Guillermo Trujillo, in his studio. A graduate of Rhode Island School of Design and the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris (she is French on her mother’s side), De Obaldía received the John Hauberg fellowship to study glass techniques at the Pilchuck School in Stanwood, Washington and has also studied with the Norwegian expert in sand casting, Bertil Vallien and Czech master glass engraver, Jiri Harcuba. The museum of the Rhode Island School of Design has recently acquired one of her sculptures for its permanent collection.

This suite of sculptures in glass represents several years of experimentation by the artist with techniques that enable her to produce works on a larger scale than before. Each sculpture is individually kiln cast, then hand ground and polished. All works are signed and dated 2001.
